Robert E Lee was not a "brilliant commander," he was actually an incompetent General.
"Professionals speak of logistics, while amateurs speak of tactics." A "brilliant commander" would have ensured that the most important aspect of the job is adequately taken care of. However, the Grand Army of Northern Virginia starved while fighting in Virginia.
Lee was a very clever tactician. However, because Lee didn't understand the war he was fighting or how it could be won, those clever tactics cost him resources the CSA couldn't afford to lose.
Lee was valedictorian of his West Point class. Lee served under Winfield Scott, who is arguably the best American general in history (and Scott certainly was at that time). Despite that background, somehow Lee failed to understand the most important aspect of being a General, and he fought the wrong war for his objectives. That's not a "brilliant commander," it's the reason the CSA lost a war that the Union spent the first 3 years of the war trying to lose themselves.
Well done.
However, you said that the war continued for four more years. The actual fighting lasted for two years after Gettysburg.
The aftermath of the war continues until today. 😢
I am going through your older videos since I came across your channel last week. I am very satisfied you decided to use your own voice! The AI was horrible with pronunciation and tempo.
Thank you for taking the time to talk to us.
I like how Lee was a bad general in part because of his dialect of "Southern gentleman" frequently lead to miscommunications if he wasn't talking to someone else with that dialect like Stonewall Jackson
What a crock, please show me any southern general, or soldier that was admitting to fighting to keep slaves, so hundreds of thousands of non slave owners, dirt farmers, died for slavery……what bullshit
If Lee could have destroyed the Union army in the Virginia theater there were factions in the Union, such as General McClellan who would have sued for a peace agreement. Its not far fetched to think that Lee’s strategy would have worked if as he said his orders had been obeyed at Gettysburg.
Would General Pickett have been with instead of behind his division at Gettysburg and succeeded in breaking the Union line on Cemetery Ridge if there had been a shad bake on the far side?
Slavery is a big deal, however ladling slavery into the command Structure IS basically bullshit . Again ladling in the slavery issue is again bullshit ; the loss of Jackson and the Calvary screw up are two major major issues plus the Confederate artillery really wasn't up to snuff
