I would call these ties, if you call the victories, then they are pyrrhic victories for Lee since each so-called victory pushed Lee closer to surrender by weakening his army.
Lee won a lot of battles, I'm not doubting his talent, but won EVERY is innacurate. He lost 2 or 3, definitely Gettysburg.
"Lee won every battle!" Gettysburg was not even CLOSE, what are you talking about?! I don't care how much of a "genius" Lee was on every other day of his life, the day of Gettysburg, that old man was a FOOL. And Longstreet warned him, every step of the way. Don't pretend that Lee had no idea. Longstreet told him down to the minutest detail exactly what would happen and everything he said came true exactly how he said it. If Lee had died instead of Stonewall, we'd all be speaking Dixie today.
To treat the Confederate's starting a war and killing thousands as the fault of Grant is Lost Cause mythology…even when spouted by "Northern" editorials. The Confederacy wasn't some whirlpool you go around or a passing storm that you avoid by staying indoors. Considering a rouge region's serial murder spree to defend their ability to enslave humans as some unavoidable act of nature without any moral responsibility makes no sense.
The fact that it took so many lives and so many resources to quill an unnecessary rebellion is evidence of the traitorous and depraved character of the Southern cause.
Grant was a superior general because he understood grand strategy and had the will to pursue it in the face of an intractable foe incapable of decency or mercy despite the veneer of courtesy and honor.
War is more than logistics and to reduce Union victory to simply leveraging resources is a disservice to historical analysis. Lee's pride, a full reflection of the traitorous culture he defended, lost the war because he made it a contest of wills rather than a contest between nations.
But that's (in part) because what he was fighting for was no nation. His lack of humility and remorse, surrendering as if he'd actually won is lucifarian.
Tactical genius will lose to strategic competence most of the time especially when that competence is paired with an indomitable will and a honorable cause.
Lee was smart but he was not wise, not honorable, not good. He lost to superior generalship…and to a better cause.
