Well, we now know the initial piracy that started amongst the Somali fisherman was against the Chinese factory dredging ships , and other smaller vessels at first who were taking advantage of fishing with impunity and unchallenged due to the lack of any form of government oversight and not a penny going to the fisherman whose local stocks were being decimated. China had ships there for years. Once they saw how successful the local fisherman had been that is when the big boys moved in and the big money started flowing.
Now Somalia just send people to the US to defraud the government
There's a Russian company that drives a ship there and if you pay 20k you get a rpg and high caliber rifle to hunt somali pirates 😂
Interesting claims that the Somali piracy threat was removed once merchant vessels started carrying armed security; I started my marine engineering career in '96, in the oil and gas industry & have never sailed on an armed vessel. In fact, the opposite is closer to the truth, with many vessels purposely NOT arming because once you do that, the Pirates stop warning and threatening, instead start off shooting or attacking with RPGs, not a great outlook for an oil tanker or gars carrier, where all equipment on deck, forward of the funnel, HAVE to be intrinsically safe, creating no spark that could trigger an explosion. Instead all points of egress are battened down, security watches set, to spot threatening vessels well in advance. Only 7 bar fire hoses were used to repel borders, which make it impossible for them to board, something already difficult, as these "experts" demonstrate so brilliantly, failing to board even such a small & ancient wreck as the Iceberg-I!!!
Just from the age of the vessel, long before seeing what an awful condition it was in, I suspected it wasn't owned or being run by a reputable company but cutting their personnel adrift like that was appalling. The unerring belief by the pirates that diamond and gold were hidden somewhere onboard a vessel more likely to succumb to a storm that be boarded by Pirates, is intriguing!!! I assume they connected the rumour with the rich owners, who surely could afford far better and more modern vessels, so they must have been trying to sneak such a valuable cargo under the radar!!! 🤷🏻🤦🏻♀️ As a mariner, if you ever sign with a new agency and turn up at port to meet your new vessel and it looks anything like that, never mind the open topped, wooden lifeboats, pay back any advance, turn around and go home, then find a new agency! Whatever pay they're offering isn't worth the daily nightmare you'll face trying to keep the vessel afloat and making way, never mind the risk you'd face in bad weather 😳
sad but beautiful ending
As long as they aren't American 🇺🇸 . Who cares ?
My ship was under attack. 2007. "Dubai legend". I was lucky we were saved by the Australian Navy.
I had to deal with PTSD of my officers and crew.
More of these videos please from around the world
This only happened because commerical fishing vessels ruined the fish stock and forced desperate people into crime. It does not justify their actions, but it must not be forgotten that the modern world creates these issues
