27:05 they weren't snapping, Stanzi, it was just the submersible seasoning. -Stockton Rush, probably
Ahem. I shall sing the hymm of remembrance to mark the solemnity of their passing. "MY DUMB STEP DAD'S DYING IN A SUBMARINE" 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉
While being a tragedy I can't stop thinking of everyday, average workers dy!ng at their job places because of a lack of security measures, all just cause some resources-cutting, rich b4st4rd couldn't give a single flying f*** about that. It's like when Hollywood stars big a$$ houses get annihilated after a natural disaster, suddenly it's all about media attention, prevention & care meanwhile when is about normal people's houses getting hit well, who gives a shit right? I may be an a**hole here, but damn, it looks like a rich, idiotic narcissist got a taste of their own medicine. Too bad for the other souls involved tho…
I don't understand those people who crawl into those tiny tunnel caves. That's insane
20:07 a small stationary d1ck is acc killing me😭😭😭
like markiplier says: FUCK THE OCEAN
Socratic wisdom is apparently not a renewable resource, because rich men are running out fast.
That pedro pascal joke just got me laughing out loud at 3 o clock in the morning
Who gets named Stockton 🤮 He was cursed from the start. Literally one of the worst cities in California lmao way to live up to your name tho
My childhood drama teacher is related to the captain of the titanic
I’ve been fascinated by the titanic since I was 6. I’m 38 lol.
I too almost died from a riptide. Unfun. Happy you survived as well. 😄
I think Stockton Rush was reincarnated from a rich guy who stopped a 3rd class passenger from getting on a lifeboat.
Holy shit, even I know that carbon fiber is a terrible material for the hull of a sub and I’m by no means a material scientist (I’m a marine biologist, so I at least know about physics as it pertains to depth)! I’m also an archery instructor and my biggest pet peeve with carbon fiber arrows is that if they hit anything hard, like the frame of a target stand, the metal tips get driven back into the fibers and split open the shaft. Those fibers are like shards of glass! They hurt like hell if you get them in your skin and they break off in the skin super easy. No way that material would hold up under the pressure at that depth.
Sorry but if people actually saw "Oceangate happened years ago let it go already" I'd be like the freaking Titanic sank a hundred years ago and people won't shut up about it! Leave me and my weird fixations alone.
A few tidbits as a fellow fixator on this random topic:
1. They didn't actually team up with Boeing to make Titan or Cyclops. The only collaboration they had was Oceangate asking Boeing to do some analysis on how the carbon fiber might handle pressure, before any of the submersibles had been built. Stockton lied about them helping build it. He also lied about them selling him cheap "expired" carbon fiber. He also also lied about collaborating with NASA.
2. The reason he called customers "mission specialists" was to skirt the laws around being able to take passengers in a vessel that was not regulated at all by anyone. There is attempts to put laws in place to prevent people from doing this in the future.
3. Carbon fiber *can* work as material for a submersible (hypothetically), it's just that Stockton Rush skimped out in every possible way. Boeing recommended making it 9 inches thick at minimum. Stockton went for 5 inches. It's supposed to be woven a very specific way, they didn't bother. (Basically, he had all the fibers going in the same direction, when it has been shown they should be at a certain angle and have the layers going in different directions) The layers of carbon fiber even had bubbles and wrinkles, which they then buffed out and continued layering over.
Evidence suggests the layers separating was the failure point that caused, not an implosion, but a buckling that cracked the vessel in half. He also allegedly got crappy second hand carbon fiber. Then stored it outside during freezing winter, and dragged it behind the ship instead of having it on board which would minimize stress on the fibers. It had been banged around several times before finally failing entirely.
The thing about a carbon fiber vessels is not that it can't work, but that it WILL fail eventually. It gets weaker every single time it's sent deep under water.
This is the… 10th? 12th?… video I've watched on this subject in 3 days. Spiraling down the rabbit hole. Cannot believe how much worse it gets the more I watch.
The broken heart on the young man was very nice. It's very upsetting to hear he didn't even want to go on it.
Something that also really upsets me about this case is that he had a son who now has to deal with both the grief from the loss of his father and the ridicule his arrogance caused. It's not fair that this kid has to deal with this.
As much as I like to joke condolences to the families
It really reminds me of one of those old fables about hubris, like the Emporer's New Clothes or King Knut
"it doesn't take lives if you're doing it right" care to explain what thats supposed to mean!? (:0
I've never seen the size difference in the two YT plaques 😮
The idea of testing it remotely never occurred to me until one of his own guys said it😂
Why not just get in a real sub, control your own fake sub as you go down…
And then when the sub implodes you could've gone "Wow! That could've been friends and family in there! Good thing for these tests, eh?"
Like, what is it about these billionaire innovators with their ai and other dangerous tech and hating tests? Tony Stark did tons of tests. Tests are awesome.
But I guess they're not very awesome to investors, which to me is the root of the problem nowadays.
Everytime they call Stockton a 'Genius' It feels like they should be saying 'Idiot Scientist' Like in Lilo and stitch.
Whats more eerie is the fact that his wife’s ancestors died in the Titanic. They were the old couple that embraced each other, as the ship was sinking. They both choose to die in the boat because they both didn’t wanna leave each other’s side.
okay the oxygen timer…what the FUCK are american news DOING
Ocean gate holds a special place in my heart. I was inaugurated into my bfs family chat with WEEKS of ocean gate memes to swim through XD
stockton rush more like stockton crushed
Even the big hog on the bed is traumatized. I love him.
I’m surprised Jim didn’t say after being told 9-11 just happened, “ welp. I’m going back in the sub”
If you’re interested in the technical details of why this submarine design was doomed from the start, the channel “Alexander the OK” did a great video and a follow up from his engineering and submersible experience.
"He didn't become the next Elon or Bezos — but he did become the one thing Elon has always tried to be, and will never achieve: *funny*." 911 I would like to report a double homicide?
Aight I made my little joke comments, as I am wont to do, but I've gotta say — as someone pursuing science professionally, this is one of those big moments where we get to see everything wrong with money and fame getting involved in scientific and technological pursuits. When rigorous self-doubt (the backbone of the modern Scientific Method) is subsumed by arrogance, and cohorts are replaced with bobble-headed yes men, preventable tragedies follow closely behind. OceanGate was a self-serving venture for Rush from the very beginning — looking UP to Bezos and Musk in the 2020s is crazy on its own, and it's clear he had no qualms with emulating their abuses. The only thing I can say positively about this man — the ONLY thing — is that unlike the paragons of techno-capitalism that inspired him so, Stockton Rush at least had the decency to show himself out and go down with his ship. The most noble, admirable thing he ever did was die.
I remember me and my friend got into a debate about this, she said it was awful about the memes and stuff and I straight up told her "I don't care because the sheer level of neglect he showed is something that kills workers and the lower class every day, except this time the rich CEO paid the price for his ego"
I'm not joking, the neglect and lack of empathy he showed is the exact same that caused amazon workers to be without toilet breaks, and such. You know, the overworked hellscape of modern jobs. Except rather than the ceo's lack of care and actions damaging small poor communities and killing them, this time the CEO was the victim of his own actions, and not others. That is why I don't care
Holy shit as an NTSB maritime investigation fangirl I didn't know CAPT. JASON NEUBAUER was in this documentary, that's like scoring the DiCaprio of government safety boards. I already read 94,768 pages of NTSB documentation on this incident but now I guess I am gonna have to watch it after all…
16:45 “worry about the carbon fibre of your pants” lmao
