I had a 3DFX card. It was amazing. Different times back then. Hardware was changing pretty quickly. Nowadays you do get incremental updates but the pipeline of new tech has slowed. Between 1995 and 2005 hardware changed a lot. Operating systems changed a lot too. (Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000). Crazy.
I remember this era at Activision. While I worked there I remember hanging out with the team building Mech Warrior. it was a crash course in computer graphics, interactive and interface design, bandwidth budgets. Things that are important today and were more critical then because everthing was very crude and prone to crash if a strict discipline wasnt enforced across everything… bandwidth in the realm of 1mb per second..

I remember being clueless in the age of early 3D gaming… and my dissapointment with the "upgrade" 4 meg S3 ViRGE That looked no different for the money spent in 1997. Later I got a cheap version of the TnT by nvidia, it was a cut down card called a Vanta. I think it had 16 megs on it it in 2000. I switched Quake II between software and Open GL just to see the diff and was amazed then. Good and bad memories.
