Mischer was the captain of the Hornet at midway. While Yorktown and Enterprise were Midway heroes Hornet was the stepchild doing nothing except pickin his nose in a corner. Mitscher was trying to make up for his Midway sad performance in the Philllipine Sea battle. Later in Leyte Halsey and Mitscher got their chance to derelict their duty and chase carriers abandoning Taffy 3 and the invasion force to battleships. Taffy 3 saved Halseys bacon by surviving the battleship force that attacked him.
