  1. Interesting "fun" facts about the sinking of Musashi vs the sinking of the Shinano. For one thing, the Musashi was attacked only by air…so the torpedoes that hit Musashi were all aerial torpedoes, which have warheads that are a bit smaller than the warheads on the Mark 14 sub launched torpedo. But more importantly, the torpedo bombers that attacked Musashi were using a tactic called "hammer and anvil", where the torpedo bombers attack from both sides of a target ship to try and get as many torpedoes as possible to hit the target. However, it also means that torpedoes are going to punch holes in both sides of the target ship…which can actually keep the ship afloat for longer, since it tends to equalize the flooding and keep the ship more on an even keel.

What the US figured out after the sinking of Musashi was that torpedoes have a much bigger effect when they hit on only one side of a ship, since that almost always leads to the ship heeling over and capsizing much more quickly. So when the Japanese battleship Yamato came out to attack the US naval forces at Okinawa in April of 1945, the torpedo bombers that attacked her tried to focus on Yamato's port side, such that the battleship sank after only 11 torpedo and 6 bomb hits…as compared to sinking Musashi that took 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs. And since there was only one sub attacking Shinano, the torpedoes fired by Archerfish obviously only hit one side of the carrier…and as we see in the video, along with the other factors they spoke of, the Shinano's listing uncontrollably is what sent her to the bottom so quickly.

Also…even if Shinano had had any aircraft on board, once the list to either side exceeded about 10 degrees, launching or landing any planes would have become pretty much impossible.

  2. 18:56 important to note there were no planes on board the ship during this sortie, the planes they showed earlier at the 3 minute mark were theoretical capacity of the carrier, by this point in the war the Japanese were extremely short of both aircrew and airplanes to the point that some completed carriers were dressed up as villages to hide them from us aircraft while people tried to find planes for them.

Also Japanese anti submarine capabilities were extremely weak throughout the entire war, so a US sub going directly under a Japanese destroyer undetected is pretty unsurprising

  3. Historiograph’s a good channel. Love their naval videos.

Also, Shinnano… Yet another victim of the luck vampire Yukikaze. Definitely recommend watching Drach’s video on her to truly understand that reference.
