Water was polluted.
This is great. Makes me thirsty; I'm past my big drinking days.
I would expect the most excellent and lovely Dr Janega will have tried Tim Taylor's Landlord, spending a bit of time in York. Thanks also to the other contributors. I'm surprised more people haven't dialled in to this.
Nice one Eleanor! ✨⭐👍
Clicked so fast I almost sprained my thumb
Thanks

Eleanor is unconventionally hot.
Does the last name Parry or Perry come from being a maker of Peary?
My extended family, immigrants from England, owned The Brittania Arms in Cupertino, one of the first British pubs in California in the late 70s/early 80s. I got to hang out there on occasion as a little kid since it was the 70s 😆
They would also add various psychedelics and other "drugs" to their beers up until the 17th century, and laws would change all the time regarding what was and wasn't allowed. The small amount of alcohol would "extract" the alkaloids in these plants into the drink, giving the drink the qualities of the plants/drugs.
It’s fascinating how everyday drinks can reveal so much about history. Do you think medieval people drank ale more for survival than enjoyment? Thanks for sharing!
Cheers !
So many re-uploads under different titles
Growing up Catholic, in America, I was taught that Communion was the entire point of the Mass. I can't believe I've got to 65 years old and I'm JUST learning Catholics of the past were NOT given Communion at every Mass! I learned this literally yesterday, while watching a different video by 'The Antiquary' and asked about it in the comments. He answered stating that he thought it changed for Roman Catholics after Vatican II in 1965!!! He also said it was one of the disputes in the Reformation. I feel this topic needs more clarification. I realize discussing it might be divisive, but really, it is a huge thing in the Church, and the Church was HUGE in the medieval era, impacting ALL of medieval life in Western Civilization.
Why did medieval people drink? Because cola hadn't been invented and without pasteurization fruit juice gets a bit heady after a while.
Eleanor and ale, what a perfect afternoon. 😍 Full disclosure: I've always MUCH preferred dark ales over beers.
