It was inevitable that the Soviet would cross the river and breach the defences. The Germans defense was lacking from the start owing to the fact that Hitler would never allow comprehensive defenses to be built while his forces were still further east. He was worried that his forces would just fall back if there were ready defenses behind them. What they needed and didn't have was strong static defenses in depth and mobile reserves to counter breakthroughs. But even if they had managed to shore up the Eastern Front and stop the Soviet advance, it wouldn't have saved the Germans in the end. The US had the atomics and they were being built for Germany, that was the plan.
