Simple, warm clothes and fire places. The image we have is their hot climate clothing.
They would not go far from the towers , they would see one third of a mile so simply stay at the tower for warmth from the fire. Do you think the enemy would be on the attack in such cold weather? A portable fire to keep them warm , clever idea for those from the cold regions, no, they would be seen approaching!
