These poor guys were all willingly (sometimes unwillingly) taking part in government-approved suicide missions. A small number of stupidly courageous men were never going to turn the tide of a war that was never meant to be won.

I went down some of those tunnels when I was in Vietnam. They're really tight and I was afraid I wouldn't get out at the end.

Love your narration, man. I've been living in Vietnam since 2014 and have crawled to a few of these tunnels, not only the ones in Cu Chi near Sai Gon that have become a tourist attraction. They're all different and you can see the evolution from years of learning from success and failure. It took balls of steel to be a tunner rat but I also admire those who spent years underground in those tunnels. It's impossible to describe the humidity, heat and poor quality of air down there. Many spent months, even years, without seeing daylight when recovering from combat injuries.

I used to be a commercial diver, 1st thing that I was made to do was confined space certification. Being 5'6" and 145 pounds, I was shoved into pipes. Lol. My foreman was a Vet, told me id have been forsure a tunnel rat if I was from another generation and in Nam. Funny because even long before I had a fascination about them and heard stories from my dad's friend who was. He wouldn't even talk to his family about it but was an open book to me, a 12 year old kid at the time. I felt honored actually. I held onto every word
